EMPTY MIRROR P Janwillem van de Wetering Books

Like a series of letters written to home from someone spending their first summer at an overnight camp. Very raw and unpretentious. Certainly not a lecture or tome or advertisement of Zen. It is fun to be allowed into a Zen temple, sometime in the 60's or early 70's, and poke around a bit. No great thunderclaps of Zen realization, thank goodness. Never-the-less we do get a hint that in some small but important way the author benefitted from his efforts. And we the reader benefit from getting one person's inside look at a Zen temple and a look into the struggle to determine the value of the effort to become "enlightened."

EMPTY MIRROR P Janwillem van de Wetering Books Reviews

Great price for a book full of wisdom
One of my favorite if not my all-time favorite books. I don't even know how many times I've re-read it and given it away (matter of fact, I've had to buy it a ridiculous amount of times because I keep giving my copies away).
A must for Zen people and really, a must for anyone.
westerners often mistake the mundane and passe with deep religious portent. perhaps they imbue the dishwashing and pot scrubbing with too much mystic wizardry. find a place where people leave you alone, make a daily effort to clean up after yourself and open your mind to new ideas. after that you're following a cult of personality or just learning to dance a new step. the book did ok.
The author is a great storyteller that gets the reader introduced to Zen philosophy and Japanese culture through the lens of his personal experience. It’s insightful and witty and easy to read. I enjoyed it very much!
This is a great and probably little known underground book. As a person on the 'spiritual path' I could definitely relate to this man's experience although I have never practiced Zen.
He is clear and honest and I learned a few things from him.
Really enjoyed it & looking forward to reading the two sequels. As a serious American student of Tai Chi, it helped me to better understand & appreciate the challenges of meditation & committing to a discipline that isn't mastered overnight.
I had read this book about 30 years ago and so enjoyed it. So glad I rediscovered it! Buddhists in particular will appreciate this man's journey. The content is easy and captivating, but the print is difficult to read. It was very smeared looking and hard on the eyes.
