I don't usually buy books hot off the press, nor do I usually read books of this genre; however due to serendipitous circumstances (and the fact that I loved the title) I made a spontaneous purchase! I am so glad that I did! From the first paragraph to the last, I was hooked! I couldn't put it down.
The Garden of Blue Roses is like a perfect soup recipe with just the right amount of each ingredient, not too much or too little of anything, creating a unique sensory experience unlike anything else; and/but keeps you coming back for more! 2 tablespoons of intrigue, 1 tablespoon of suspense, 2 teaspoons of philosophy, 1 teaspoon of history, a dash of humor (albeit dark), a pinch of gore, a shake of compassion, and a 5 cups of literary genius. Bon appétit!

The Garden of Blue Roses Michael Barsa 9781630230616 Books Reviews

Michael Barsa treats the reader to a twisting and malevolent voyage through the badly troubled mind of Milo, his introverted protagonist whose paranoid grasp on reality leads him to experience dangerous fantasies he cannot differentiate from reality. Who murdered his evil yet famous author father and was his sister's lover a macabre character come to life from horror novels by his father? Read and learn the appalling truths.
This book is fantastic, it has been a long time since I've come across a book like this. The author does a fantastic job of sprinkling clues, setting scenes, creating unusual and complex characters. When you read these pages, you are in this book - and what a spooky book it is! I normally give my books away when I finish reading them but this one is staying on the shelf for re-reads. Thank you! I highly recommend reading this book late at night, outside on the porch, at the edge of the woods and by candlelight)
I was hooked from the first page and wanted to devour the book in one gulp. Full of intriguing twists and turns, the Garden of Blue Roses pulls you into Milo and Klara’s world in which layer upon layer unfold to reveal mysteries of the past and present. Superb character development lays the perfect foundation to explore the complexities and struggles of these characters. Beautifully written, captivating, and deliciously dark, you will hang onto every word with bated breath. Both the narratives and poetry reveal a particular level of unprecedented creativity. Upon reaching the last page of the book, my immediate thought was - I want more!!!
I just finished The Garden of Blue Roses. This is a tremendous piece of work – masterful and spellbinding. It bends the norms of horror novels in a gripping way. The main character (Milo) and his father are certainly creepy, but the book’s purpose is not to pander to the crass gaper. Milo’s narration is so meticulous, and the prose so precise, that the reader begins to pleasantly experience the dissection of a psychopathology that has a natural explanation, as a captivated tourist might enjoy the natural display of carnage on the savannah once you appreciate its causes. I will be waiting for Barsa’s second book.
Literature, language, and wordplay are some of my favorite things. Normally, I would not look for these in a psychological mystery novel. However, all are combined within the pages of Michael Barsa’s The Garden of Blue Roses. The fine line between what is real and what is fiction is irretrievably crossed time and again as the characters are filtered through the mind of Milo, a narrator who is sometimes an emotionally and physically abused child and other times a merciless, diabolically calculating adult. It is impossible to catch all the literary, film, and historical references woven throughout this book on the first read, but it is great fun trying. Just as those references are from ancient times to modern, so are readers cast about through time and space as the mystery unfolds. Or does it?
This is an extraordinary novel. It is spooky, beautifully constructed, highly literate, and a nail-biter. A family story, of a malevolent sort. The parents have died in a mysterious accident. The narrator, the younger child in the family, is highly unreliable – he may be deranged, or maybe not; he may be having delusions, or maybe not; there may be something supernatural going on, or maybe not. His sister is also peculiar, and is making mysterious plans. In any event, the atmosphere is threatening.

Readers who want to have everything clearly laid out for them, who want to know where they are at all times, will not find this their cup of hemlock. But for the many of us who welcome suspense and ambiguity, it is a compelling read.

This is the most unusual, the more original book, that I have read in years. It is daring.
I needed something completely different to read and so picked up my Goodreads friend's novel The Garden of Blue Roses. I found it to be a stylish, creepy story with an unreliable narrator who may be insane. Thankfully, the atmosphere of horror and mayhem is mostly in the narrator's imagination, but for a final bloody deed. The story moves at a good clip, nicely suspenseful.

The novel opens with the narrator Milo and his sister having just lost their parents in a freak car accident. Their father was a well-known horror writer. Both children are damaged by their childhood with a distant mother and father who used them in various nefarious ways.

Klara decides to create a garden. Milo does not support her idea, and worse, he distrusts the gardener she has hired who seems to use his charms to manipulate women clients. Milo is convinced that Henri is mimicking one of his father's murderous creations.

With many twists and turns, the plot resolves without just deserts, the wily villain mastering all
