his book is full of raw, distorted emotion. Imagine being a high school girl with no friends, a mother with an undiagnosed mental disorder, a father who ignores before mentioned disorder, self-esteem issues derived from issues with mother and not feeling wanted. This girl is a ticking time bomb and no one around her can see it. The book is told from Julianne's POV and is full of feelings, emotions, and perceptions which makes it even more interesting.

The one word I can use to describe Julianne's life is depressing. Her brother who may be her one piece of sanity has gone to college and left her with a father that works most of the time and a mother who comes easily uncorked, especially when she is not taking her meds. Julianne is emotionally and physically abused by her mother and does not have any friends her age. How can she when she can't even bring them home? She pours what is left of herself into playing the piano and hopes that this will one day be her escape from Mobile, Alabama and more importantly, her mother. Her home life brought me sadness but more than that I was extremely angry. Angry that her mother would give Julianne so much hope and then shoot it down in the blink of an eye and angry that her father did nothing. Sometimes it was very difficult to not get emotionally wrapped up in a book and this was one of those.

Julianne's long time piano teacher has a medical issue and can no longer give her lessons leading up to her big college audition and sends his nephew Isaac to teach her. Isaac is much like Julianne; he is distant, sad and comes with a lot of baggage. Is some weird way they understand each other but can two wounded souls really have a meaningful relationship? In some moments, I think they can but Julianne's need to be wanted made if difficult for me to tell if she was really into Isaac or into the idea of being wanted by a boy. Did I mention that he is 27 and Julianne is 17? I was a little bothered by the age difference but I think it had more to do with the emotional scars each had. I felt like they were taking advantage of each other in a sense.

Then there is Dave who was a good friend of Isaac's from college. He was kind, caring and quite the swooner. He was the opposite of Isaac in every way and he likes Julianne. I wouldn't say this necessarily led to a love triangle but it certainly made the story interesting. Should Julianne be with Isaac? He is sexy but is as broken as she is. Should she be with Dave? He is sweet and always seems to be there to pick Julianne up when she is down. Or is Julianne not fit for any sort of relationship at this point? I am not sure Julianne knows what love is or what it should feel like. It is one thing to be wanted or perceive you are wanted but it is another to be loved. I changed my mind several times during the book on how I wanted this to end; I was happy and surprised to say the least;)

While the beginning of this one started a little slow for me, it ended up being full of twists and turns, moments that will make you feel like everything is going to be okay and then moments that make you feel like the roof is caving in. I promise you that it will keep you hanging and you will not know how it is going to end until it is over.

We've all read a book that had a character that was so completely talented you were envious, almost a little jealous!!

By the second paragraph, I was engulfed into Want.
The writing is exceptional. It flows like poetry.
It has a touch of forbidden lust, a damaged family, and one very talented girl.

Julianne is a brilliant pianist. When her instructor turns ill, he suggests that she employ the help of his equally talented grandson, Isaac Laroche.
She quickly forms a crush for her teacher, but discovers within the process that he is hiding things about his past. Things that everyone else of this small southern town know about, but refuse to mention.
But Julianne's family isn't perfect either. There are deep secrets that effect Julianne, and may prevent her from achieving her dream of playing in Boston.

Ms. Lawton did an impressive job of making (view spoiler) me enjoy, and empathize with all the characters. (Even the unsavory ones!)

Julianne- This book is such a journey. As are most books. But how my feelings were at the beginning- compared to the end-were completely altered. I knew that when I finished, Julianne life was going to towards the direction of better.
I KNOW the reason she captured my interest; her voice was almost like her playing, it had a very euphonious quality. And her passion for her the piano was infectious, she's completely incandescent!
Though on a more somber note, (this is when you'd play a sad melody.. *wink wink*) she's a casualty of a very damaged home life. It comes for the one pillar in her life that you don't expect, and it made me crinkle my nose in displeasure. I wanted to scream out for someone to SAVE Julianne.

Isaac Laroche- (You have to say his full name. Can't you imagine his smooth southern accent?)
Such a torrid character. He has such a concealed past. You can see why Julianne is attracted to him! I mean, we all love a tortured man! You know you should stay away but you can't. Well... that's how I felt while reading Want. There's issues that throw up the red flag but you hope he gathers the buoyancy move on from his past. (view spoiler)

Another thing that I extremely enjoyed was the setting of an old southern town. It's almost like going back in time! Their thoughts, and ways. They're firmly set in their beliefs.

I classified this as Edgy/ New Adult. Although Julianne is 17, this book has a raw feel to it that I thought was realistic and amazing!

The most pressing question I thought about once I finished..... There has to be a sequel. There's a sequel right?! RIGHT?! I'd love to read more about ALL of these exceptional characters.
