Healing relationships, PTSD, Financial back-stabbing and HEA'sSusan Mallery has written a beautiful story of life and looking forward. Easy to follow storyline. Believable characters, with distinct personalities. Entertaining and informative dialogue.
Michelle, a medically retired vet returns home to find out her inn is deeply in debt.
Carly, single mother of Gabby, works at the inn believing she was buying into it.
They both struggle through a friendship broken by both families and loving the same man.
Great dialogues:
“You can. You don’t want to. There’s a difference.”
"I’m going to kill you.”
Mango patted her shoulder. “If I had a nickel for every time someone threatened me, I’d be a rich man. Five more, Michelle. Don’t make me use my physical-therapist voice. You won’t like it.”
“People have trouble admitting when they act for purely selfish reasons. Telling the truth about something like that forces them to redefine their sense of self. So they make up a story. We all do it. Tell stories to explain the unexplainable. To get by. Sometimes the stories even help us survive that which would otherwise destroy us.”
“I don’t want to let him back in my life,” she murmured. “I want him to go away. Is that bad?”
Pauline touched her arm. “The idea that we have to unconditionally love our parents, no matter what they do to us, is a crock of sh@@." She grinned. “So to speak.”
I will re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.

When the best part of a book is the chicken salad recipe at the end, you know there is a problem.
A book about a female war vet with PTSD returning home after ten years sounded like a great idea for a plot until I read this book. Everything is too easily resolved for Michelle in a quick ending. All returning vets need is a landlord, a couple of sandwiches, an abused dog and several PTSD meetings to resolve life long issues and mental health concerns in order to sail off into marital bliss.
St. Carly, denounced as the resident high school sleaze marries a man who slept with her best friend two days before the wedding. Sadly, she was stunned when the marriage didn't work and has spent the last ten years working for less than minimum wage while raising her daughter. After a decade of lies and abuse from Michelle's mother, Carly know has to deal with having a very unstable Michelle as her boss.
Carly and Michelle have a schizophrenic relationship that is exhausting and don't even get me started about Sam!!!! The evil banker scenario is silly, especially since the revenge is high school based and not even well explained.
I will definitely be staying on the mainland reading this book.
After several duds and mediocre entries in this long-running series, the author picked up steam. This is the ninth book (not counting a few novellas) in a series comprised of trilogies set in Fool's Gold, a town located squarely in the heart of Romanceland. People are friendlier, better-looking, and more laden with secret angst from their pasts. The men tend to be wealthier and taller, too, always a good thing. In this novel, Charlie (Chantal) is trying to cope with a traumatic event by doing her best to look and act like a man. She's gruff, tough, and a firefighter to boot. Clay, the too-gorgeous-to-believe underwear model, is back in town and attempting to establish his bona fides as a business owner...but everyone keeps looking at his rear view. To add complications, Charlie's mother has descended upon her, filled with narcissism and a blind disregard for anyone else. Clay's business hits some snags. But, as any romance reader knows, a happy-ever-after is in sight. This is a formulaic romance, but I found it a great way to pass a long day in waiting rooms. It's also a fast read, so if you read well, have a second book on hand as you will go through this before the day is over.
First the good news this book is easy to read, the pace is good, the story flows, some of the conversations are fun, both H/h are interesting to read about and the feel of this fantasy town is very pleasant. Now for the bad news the whole story is just too unrealistic and stretches even my very excellent ability to suspend disbelief, so it was hard to really "feel" this story, and there were plot devices that were clearly there just to add "filler" to keep the story going just a bit longer (e.g. the obstacles that cropped up as H' set up his business.) The whole story felt as if it were written by formula - which isn't always bad but in this instance was too obvious. The story felt forced and people did things that were out of character, each time there was an instance of this I found it harder to believe the story. SPOILERS I found it hard to believe that the impact of rape would be cured like that; the character of the mother was so dreadful that it was hard to believe in such a speedy redemption, much less in the miraculous healing of the mother-daughter relationship; the problems that occurred in the H's business plan felt like filler and were distracting for nothing; and the whole way H "broke up" w/ h was silly and made no sense for someone who had been a thoughtful character up to that point. END SPOILER ALERT. That said, it was a pleasant enough way to spend a few hours and I will go back and read more Fool's Gold stories.
I thought this was a really great book. It seemed at first that Michelle did wrong, but once you start getting into the book that you see Carly did hurtful things herself. It was a shame that Michelle’s Mother treated both girls terrible. They both had it bad with both their parents when they left together leaving behind their children. In the end Michelle and Carly both made something out of themselves with really no help from any parents. Michelle went into the military and save several soldiers and Carly practically taking over the inn and keeping it afloat. I’m so glad they made their way back to eac other.
