I bought this for my child because it's a required reading in his school. I read it. It's about family, family secrets, and how families, neighbors, and people handle and cope with something considered illegal by the government, but personal for families. I like it hoping that after my son and his classmates finish reading it, it will help them realize that the world is not black or white.

Among the Hidden Shadow Children Margaret Peterson Haddix Cliff Nielsen 9781416924982 Books Reviews

Very well written story of secret defiance of the authority denying more than two children per family. The third child of one family finds a kindred spirit in Jen, the hidden daughter of a neighbor who is a rebel of sorts. She educates and tries to lead the illegal children to freedom. What results from that effort gives our character the strength to take his next step to reach that freedom. Held my interest and strong characters.
Summer reading for granddaughter
I bought this book for my granddaughter. She has to read it through the summer as suggested by her 7 the grade Teacher. It is a requirement for all students entering 7th grade. I would say it is a good read.
Sort of a "boring story," according to my daughter who said for more than half of the story, the character is stuck in his house without anything major happening. Still, she was intrigued with the beginning and the ending wrapped up nicely.
What an intriguing concept! I've read Haddix's The Missing series, and this was the first book I've read in the Shadow Children series. My daughter (5th grade) and I read this together. It is fascinating to think about how limited resources and an ever expanding population might influence government policies in the future, and how certain policies might be implemented and have unintended consequences. It was also thought provoking to see how the impact of the policies for middle-class families were so different than for upper-class families. The end was an unexpected twist.
This is a frequently read aloud novel at our middle school! Students are appalled that third children are outlawed in this future USA and will be rooting for Luke from the first chapter. And everyone who picks up this book will be caught off guard by plot twists at least once during this action packed, mysterious book one to a fabulous 7 book series. Most highly recommended by this librarian for readers in grades 5-8.
Excellent book! My daughter (10yrs old) has to read this book for school. She is not into reading but found herself wanting to keep reading this. I read the book with her to help w her book report and I thoroughly enjoyed it too.
