This is a continuation of the first book in the series where the hero, Mark Young, has pretty much come to terms with being treated as an adult. The line between right and wrong, good and evil is a bit less clear and the challenges come from choice rather than the situation. Some readers may think this story similar to Harry Potter too, but that thinking is stretching it a bit unless you think all schools of magi c are Hogwarts with another name. Besides, Harry never was very good with a sword. The notion of Magi is based on the Wise Men that bore gifts to the Christ Child. They represent the practitioners of the Zoroastrian religion of which there are many myths and legends about their deeds involving astrology, astronomy, healing, charity and knowledge of the spiritual world. The Magi of this series are derived from those Magi plus the swordsmanship, garb, horsemanship and other aspects of the Magi from the movies The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Their religious views are influenced by Old Testament Judaism, without the blood sacrifices, which produces a character type not often seen in fantasy fiction the warrior monk/cleric. The entire series is based on the question What if it were possible to learn the powers of all the Biblical prophets; what would that school be like?

This is the second in the series; the first book, The Seventh Mountain, is available free on Amazon. So many good books are available that I rarely buy any, but this was an exception. I intend to buy the next as well.

Like the first book, The Eighth Fire is well written and well thought out. The series is a classic saga of the battle of Good vs. Evil (the hero, Mark Young, is a magi-in-training and destined as the one who will save the world from the evil Benrah). It is in the same general genre as the Harry Potter books, but the occasional Hebrew phrase, references to the "One True God" and so forth show that the author is of a different mindset.

My only complaint is that this book cant stand on its own as it didn't have a solid conclusion. Judging from the way the story is playing out I'm sure the author did the best he could, but without reading the next book in the series it seems a little incomplete. That said, it's worth the few dollar investment to enjoy more of the saga. Just make sure you've read The Seventh Mountain first.

The Eighth Fire Chronicles of a Magi Gene Curtis 9781466480377 Books Reviews

When I read seventh mountain I could not find an eighth mountain, and was disappointed. Now I am disappointed that 9 is not out! The Eighth Fire has just built on what was started in the seventh mountain and further developed the characters, I am ready for nine!!!
I normally skip through the center of a book because it is normally filler but I read all of the pages of this book because it kept me interested from beginning to the end. I look forward to reading the sequel
Great imagination! I enjoyed the story from the 1st book so much that I had to buy the whole series!
This series ranks right up there with all of Rick Riordan's series, the fablehaven series, and the inheritance saga (eragon, inheritance, etc)! One of the best in my opinion. If you liked any of the above books mentioned or the HP books then you'll love the chronicles of a Magi!
Good reading for anyone 12 or older, some scary scenes so discretion advised. Swords, items containing power and secrets, and individuals with extra capabilities revolve around ancient temples. Christian motifs but not preachy.
I'm sure some will compare this series to the HP series. They would be right, but only in that is is equally well written. I enjoyed the first 2 books so far. The major thing for me is that plot actually moves you along. You enough of the world and characters detailed to get into it with being bogged down. Can't wait to get the next book.
I found The Seventh Mountain through podiobooks and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to support the author and went and bought the digital version and then bought this book. It is a good read. Great for younger readers as well. I'd like to see Mark be able to use his mysterious innate fighting ability a little more. There were several places where his skills should have kicked in and would have made total sense. It seems like he can be in danger and it is hit or miss if the skill will show itself. All in all. I enjoyed the book. I would and have recommended it to others and I look forward to the next one. Any idea when the next one is due out?
